Naan Recipe

Ingredients:

500 g/1 lb/4 cups
1 tsp
1/2 tsp

45 g/1
1/2 oz/9 tsp
250 ml/8 fl oz/1 cup
3 tsp


plain flour
baking powder
bicarbonate of soda
salt
egg, beaten
natural yogurt
butter or ghee, melted
milk
poppy seeds

 

Method:

  1. Sift flour, baking powder and bicarbonate of soda together into a mixing bowl. Season with salt.

  2. Stir in egg, yogurt and 30 g/1 oz/6 tsp butter or ghee. gradually mix in enough milk to make a soft dough. Cover bowl with a damp cloth and put in a warm place for 2 hours. Preheat oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface for 2-3 minutes, until smooth, then divide dough into 8 pieces.

  3. Roll each piece into a ball, then roll out to make ovals about 15 cm/6 inch long, pulling ends to stretch dough into shape. Brush ovals with water and place wet-side down on greased baking trays. Brush dry side with melted butter or ghee and sprinkle with poppy seeds. Bake for 8-10 minutes, until puffy and golden brown. serve at once.
